Community Engagement and Participatory Science Guide

This guide has been adapted from Boston Public Health Commission Community Engagement Toolkit, Washington State Department of Health Community Engagement Guide, and King County Community Engagement Continuum (2011). This guide serves to equip us with worksheets, tools, examples and resources to support and inform our community engagement and community based science process. Community engagement and communicating science is a two-way exchange of information, ideas and resources. Community engagement relies on seeking and creating equitable community led spaces, where we offer opportunities for communities to express their views and have a meaningful role in decision-making and inform our research practices. It should also consider the diversity of our communities, including culture and ethnicity, and seek to create an inclusive and accessible process. Effective engagement removes barriers for communities and woven in building trust. We recognize this work is challenging and complex. The rewards of successful public engagement, however, are immense and long lasting, fostering trust and community powered solutions that continue to further Bayou City Waterkeepers mission to ensuring clean water for our region.
